They weren\u2019t just funny, but for a lot of us Gen Xers\u2014they were formative. They made us laugh until we cried, gave us iconic lines to quote when appropriate (&#8220;Bye, Felicia!&#8221;), and created characters that feel like family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what made them so funny?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"850\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VfjW5jNPCpo?rel=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Friday (1995)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start with <em>Friday<\/em>. With Ice Cube and Chris Tucker making for unlikely leads at the time, <em>Friday<\/em> gave us a new type of humor about life in a neighborhood that we hadn&#8217;t experienced. It wasn\u2019t just about the jokes\u2014it was the delivery, the timing, and the fact that so many of us could see our cousins, uncles, and neighbors in Smokey and Craig. Who knew Ice Cube could be funny? Even though I had never been to South Central, it felt like an inside joke shared with the culture. And let\u2019s be honest\u2014everybody\u2019s had a \u201cbye, Felicia\u201d moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Nutty Professor (1996)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there\u2019s <em>The Nutty Professor<\/em>, which threw a comedic curveball with Eddie Murphy playing nearly every member of the Klump family. The dinner table scene alone is a masterclass in physical comedy and character work. Watching one actor bounce from a flatulent cousin (or was it an uncle?) to his wild alter ego, Buddy Love?  Comedy genius. The fact that Murphy could play all those roles so distinctly\u2014and hilariously\u2014cemented the film as a milestone in cinematic comedy. He showed us he had the range in Coming to America&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coming to America (1988)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of <em>Coming to America<\/em>, Eddie Murphy gave us one of the funniest barbershop scenes ever filmed. The movie was rich with unforgettable side characters, clever satire, and a celebration of Black royalty and excellence\u2014before we even had <em>Black Panther<\/em>. It made us laugh while telling a fairytale love story that\u2019s stood the test of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">House Party (1990)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>House Party<\/em> brought the vibe of the \u201990s house scene to the screen. The dance-offs, the fashion, the music, Bilal&#8217;s breath, John Witherspoon as the complaining neighbor, and the li&#8217;l love story they threw in there made it a classic for a generation coming of age. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <em>I\u2019m Gonna Get You Sucka<\/em>? That was parody perfection, taking all the Blaxploitation tropes and flipping them upside down with hilarious precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What ties all these films together isn\u2019t just comedy\u2014it\u2019s culture. The humor lands because it\u2019s deeply rooted in our shared experiences, language, and rhythm.
