We grew up on them, we quote them daily, and apparently, you all judge me for not finishing Love Jones. But if you had the power to remake one iconic Black film from the \u201980s or  &#8217;90s, with a modern cast, which would it be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent episode, we threw around some legendary titles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Harlem Nights<\/em> (1989)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>School Daze<\/em> (1988)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Lean on Me<\/em> (1989)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Set It Off<\/em> (1996)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The Last Dragon<\/em> (1985)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Love Jones<\/em> (1997)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>New Jack City<\/em> (1991)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Before we decide if these movies should be remade, let&#8217;s talk about the casting.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related Podcast Episode: <a href=\"https:\/\/chatandbother.com\/w\/qa-sunday-which-black-movies-from-the-80s-and-90s-shaped-our-generation\/\">Q&amp;A Sunday \u2013 Which Black Movies from the 80s and 90s Shaped Our Generation?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After some heated, hilarious debate, we landed on <em>The Last Dragon<\/em> as the one most overdue for a stylish, modern remake. Why? Because we <em>have<\/em> to see who today\u2019s Sho\u2019nuff would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"850\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qifH8e1ihPI?rel=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>We nominate Deon Cole, yes, THE Deon Cole, as the over-the-top villain Sho\u2019nuff. He\u2019s got the timing, the delivery, and just enough chaos in him to pull it off. We know it &#8211; he knows it. He was Sho&#8217;nuff for Halloween one year, so I know he&#8217;s into the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"812\" src=\"https:\/\/chatandbother.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/deoncoleshonuff-chatandbother.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2525\" style=\"width:836px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chatandbother.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/deoncoleshonuff-chatandbother.jpg 800w, https:\/\/chatandbother.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/deoncoleshonuff-chatandbother-296x300.jpg 296w, https:\/\/chatandbother.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/deoncoleshonuff-chatandbother-768x780.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For this role, we need someone who can go all the way over the top while staying hilarious, intimidating, and watchable. So if Deon Cole says no, we have a few options:  Affion Crockett, Marlon Wayans, Orlando Jones, and Busta Rhymes &#8211; four wildly different, but totally legit contenders for the glow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Affion Crockett<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"735\" src=\"https:\/\/chatandbother.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/affion-crockett.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chatandbother.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/affion-crockett.jpg 800w, https:\/\/chatandbother.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/affion-crockett-300x276.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chatandbother.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/affion-crockett-768x706.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it works:<\/strong><br>Affion Crockett is a master of physical comedy and impersonation. Sho\u2019nuff isn\u2019t subtle\u2014he\u2019s martial arts theater. Affion has the agility and comic timing to make the role his own without turning it into full on parody. I feel like he would honor the original but bring some updated flair and a coolness that the character embodies. Plus, his experience in sketch comedy means he understands how to play exaggerated characters with discipline. He\u2019s not just a goofball &#8211; he has serious acting chops. He has proven that he can do both comedy and drama. He has that rare ability to go from deadpan to explosive, which is what we need. Jones could bring an unexpected gravitas to Sho\u2019nuff that makes the character both ridiculous and mythic. Busta already <em>was<\/em> Sho\u2019nuff in the \u201cDangerous\u201d music video. He\u2019s got the size, the voice, the hair, the energy. Casting him would be a case of art imitating art imitating art. He\u2019s naturally larger-than-life and wouldn\u2019t even need to <em>act<\/em> like Sho\u2019nuff, he <em>is<\/em> Sho\u2019nuff. Plus, the culture would go <em>nuts<\/em> for it. Either Rome Flynn who played Kristoff or Alfred Enoch who played Wes Gibbons. If Chris Brown hadn\u2019t gone off the rails, we might have said him, but we can&#8217;t have his shenanigans hold up the production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re not done!
